Production

Development: On May 7, 2013, Warner Bros. Pictures and Courtney Solomon’s Sweetpea Entertainment released a movie loosely based on Dungeons & Dragons. Roy Lee, Alan Zeman, and Solomon served as producers, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the script. [6] Hasbro filed a complaint two days later, claiming that they were co-producing a Dungeons & Dragons film at Universal Pictures with Chris Morgan penning the screenplay and directing the film. The Warner Bros. film was scheduled to begin pre-production with Hasbro on August 3, 2015, after U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee pushed Sweetpea Entertainment and them to resolve the rights dispute. the 31st of March 2016

Hasbro transferred the film to Paramount Pictures in December 2017 after various stages of development, with a target release date of July 23, 2021. Chris McKay and Michael Gilio were in negotiations with Paramount in February 2018 to direct and script the film, respectively. As the casting process began, the studio entered into negotiations with a number of experts. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley had discussions about directing on July 30, 2019. The filmmaking team announced in January 2020 that they had co-written a completely new draught of the script. In the end, Daley, Goldstein, and Gilio received screenwriting credit.

Casting

Ansel Elgort was in negotiations to play the lead role in Letterman’s adaptation of the film on June 27, 2016. Chris Pine was signed up to appear in the film in December 2020. In February 2021, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, and Regé-Jean Page had been added. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis would appear in the next month of March, with Grant cast in the role of the adversary. Chloe Coleman joined the group established in April.
